JOCK'S GANG OVERCOME TITANIC ONSLAUGHT 21/7/11 Aylesbury's Summer League came to a fitting climax in its finals week with teams from the Wednesday Group defeating their Monday opponents in the semi finals. Campbells Gang, having squeaked into the semi finals at the last minute, were represented by wily fox, Bill McCafferty and the on fire Tim Sallis against the Haddenham Hitters, Lee Mallick and James Mott. The key game here was Bill's three set win against Lee courtesy of a 12 point handicap advantage. Lee had pulled back to take the second set, but in a see-saw third set just lost 31 -26. The Gang won 4 – 1 to go through to the Final. In the other semi final Joe Gerrans and Graham Butcher won a leg each and squeezed through the doubles to beat off the challenge from The Old Stagers, David Bradbury and Paul Rickard. Three of the games went to three sets and Joe, in particular, showed improving form and used his handicap advantage well to win against David Bradbury. Titanics won 3 – 2 in a good advertisement for modern attacking play against old style defence. Campbell's Gang versus Titanics in the Final saw three players of near equal ability and the youth of Joe Gerrans with a useful handicap advantage. Having lost to both Jock Campbell and Tim Sallis in the previous rounds, he showed remarkable improvement utilising a patient pushing game with sporadic hitting to beat both opponents in two straight legs. His partner, Graham Butcher, fared less well, his game not hitting the heights that he had attained in previous matches. So the result depended on the doubles and here Joe and Graham hauled themselves back from a leg down, to level the tie once again. In the third set they moved to a 30-27 position but then tightened up and lost 31-30 to hand the Title for 2011 to Jock Campbell and his Gang, Tim Sallis and Bill McCafferty. In a fun event that was run alongside the main event, Tring Ping won the play off final for 3 rd and 4 th place against Rob's Mob. Here we saw another of Aylesbury League's stars of the future in Aaron Taylor. He beat both Ken Hill and Josh Perry giving both players points. His mentor, John Richardson also beat Ken and having taken the doubles, Tring Ping won this event. ROB'S MOB ROBBED 14/7/11 The final week of matches in this year's summer league witnessed the closest finish seen for a few years. Rob's Mob lay in equal top spot with Titanics in the Wednesday Group before their crucial match which went to the wire, with Titanics winning 3 – 2. Joe Gerrans and Graham Butcher won a game each and beat Ken Hill and Josh Perry in a 3 set doubles. In all probability Rob's Mob would have finished second and progressed to the semi finals but Campbell's Gang had other ideas. Jock Campbell and Tim Sallis had an emphatic 5 – 0 win against Olu Sokoya and Nick Gourley with all games being won 2 – 0. This put them equal on points with Rob's Mob but, more importantly, ahead on legs won over all matches. Titanics will play The Old Stagers and Campbells Gang will entertain Haddenham Hitters in next week's semi finals. In other matches Jake Davis finished his matches winning both games for JC United against Martin Taylor and Mark Bevan. Well played, Jake. John Willcocks made a welcome visit to the Summer League joining his wife, Pat, in a 3 – 2 defeat of Tring Ping. John Richardson had two fine wins and Aaron Taylor's performance has promised much for the future. The Monday Group was less frenetic in the final week and, whilst The Old Stagers cruised through 5 – 0 against Clive Westbury and James Gibson to take their semi final place, Haddenham Hitters hit a roadblock against Tring Cockerels losing 3 – 2. Cynthia Kunschke kept her averages good winning twice but Lee Mallick lost a close encounter with Roger Shelton and found the handicap advantage of 15 points too great against Pallav Roy. The Tring team will play Rob's Mob in a specially arranged third and fourth place play off with the other Tring Team, Tring Ping, playing Megabucks. Elsewhere Pete Hargreaves discovered his form to beat Mark Penn and Simon Witney in his team's 3 – 2 win and Sue Marchant joined up with Ed Lock for Elmhurst to beat the Iceberg Team of Pete Eggleton and Gerry Saunders. Gerry was unbeaten for his team.
OLD STAGERS FAVOURITES TO JOIN HITTERS 7/7/11 With one week left in the round robin league matches David Bradbury and David Shapter strengthened their semi final claim in the Monday Group with a 3 – 2 win against Stuart Brewer and Vic Davies of Megabucks. Vic bucked the trend by beating both Old Stagers who now need only one point to be certain of runners up spot. Megabucks have finished their matches and presently lie in third place ahead of Tring Cockerels for whom Pallav Roy had a distinguished week. He beat Hobnobs, Alan Cornish and Malcolm Burr, to keep his team in touching distance of the leaders. In other matches there were key performances from Ed Lock and Rob Szantai both undefeated against Clive Westbury and James Gibson. Leigh Hurkett showed considerable improvement on his winter form to beat Bicester team mates, Andy Crofts and Paul O'Connell. The position in the Wednesday Group is far from finished. Rob's Mob managed a 3 – 2 win against Jock Campbell and Tim Sallis, maintaining equal top spot with Titanics who won 3 – 2 against third placed Tring Ping. The Campbell Gang is equal third with Tring and both these teams will be looking for one of the top two to lose 5 – 0 when they meet next week. Rob's Mob won their match with a fine doubles win after all individuals had won a point each in the singles. Jock is improving all the time and Tim Sallis, whilst having a good match, just lost out to Ken Hill in three sets. Joe Gerrans for Titanics claimed a prized scalp in John Richardson, but came undone against Aaron Taylor. This match was played to a good standard and pleasing to see youngsters honing their table tennis skills. Elsewhere Pat Willcocks and Paul O'Connell had a blistering evening winning 5 – 0 against Chris Hawkes and Jake Davis. The first two games went to 3 sets and Jake was unlucky not to have success against both his opponents. Nick Gourley showed his considerable experience winning twice in the 3 – 2 defeat by Elmhurst Invincibles of Ladybirds. Lianne Fisher did well to beat Olu Sokoya.
HADDENHAM HITTERS FIRST TO REACH SEMIS 1/7/11 Lee Mallick was joined by James Mott in the Monday Group of matches on his return to Aylesbury and Table Tennis to put their team, Haddenham Hitters through to the semi finals of this year's Summer Competition with two weeks still to go. They beat their sister team, Haddenham Hobnobs, despite the best efforts of John Cripps and Malcolm Burr. The Hitters have been unbeaten this year, dropping only 6 points. David Bradbury and Paul Rickard could well have joined The Hitters in the semi finals if they had not frozen against the Iceberg Team of Gerry Saunders and Leigh Hurkett who won 4 - 1. Stagers took the doubles to keep them in second spot with Megabucks who they will play next week. Josh Perry and Vic Davies represented Megabucks this week and crushed James Gibson and Clive Westbury 5 – 0. In the final match it was pleasing to see Rob Szantai turn out for Elmhurst. He was unlucky not to gain success against Roger Shelton for Tring Cockerels but helped his team mate, Ed Lock, to a fine doubles win. Ed had a good match going to deuce twice in losing to Roger and taking a three set singles win against Pallav Roy. The Wednesday Group is still far from finished. Rob's Mob and Titanics had 5 – 0 wins to put them equal top and yet to play. Next week Titanics play Tring Ping who are equal third two points behind with Campbell's Gang. Joe Gerrans was outstanding for Titanics in their defeat of Elmhurst Invincibles. Graham Butcher also surpassed himself with wins against Nick Cresswell and Ken Walton. Josh Perry and Ken Hill used heir handicap advantage to keep Chris Hawkes at bay and had just a little too much experience for Jake Davis who tried hard. Campbells Gang were kept to a 3 – 2 victory by Ed Lock, playing as reserve for Ladybirds. Ed won well against David Bradbury and joined Lianne Fisher to a doubles victory. Bill McCafferty outfoxed Lianne and Ed to remain unbeaten. In the mid-table match between Collie Clonk Clowns and Waddesdon Warriors, The Warriors took the spoils 4 – 1 despite three games going to three legs. Pat Willcocks was the lone success for the Clowns although she lost her 100% record this week against the frenetic fast play of Mark Bevan.
HOBNOBS NOBBLED 24/6/11 With three weeks left of the round robin league matches Old Stagers, David Bradbury and David Shapter, made an irresistible claim for a semi final place by beating a strong Haddenham Hobnobs team, 4 – 1. Simon Witney for Hobnobs came back from a set down to see off David Shapter in the first game but, once again, David Bradbury moved into top gear. He gave Mark Penn no room for manoeuvre in a blistering 31 – 14, 31 – 8 win, then fought back from a set down to beat Simon. David Shapter then joined the party by beating Mark and joining up with his partner to win the doubles. The Old Stagers are firmly in second place in the Monday Group having prised a 4 point gap ahead of Megabucks in third place. Firm favourites for top spot are Haddenham Hitters, Cynthia Kunschke and Lee Mallick. This week they were reduced to a 3 – 2 win by a resolute Andy Crofts for the BaD Boys, last year's competition winners. In other matches James Gibson broke his duck with a fine win against Pete Eggleton who had a 7 point start. Pete had previously beaten Clive Westbury to help partner Paul Hartnell who was unbeaten in Iceberg's 3 – 2 win. Tring Cockerels encounter with Megabucks was a close affair with a doubles win for Tony Greenham and Vic Davies giving Megabucks victory. This match was notable in that each player won once. Wednesday's Group is still not showing any clear favourites for the semi final places. Tring Ping lead by 3 points from Titanics, Rob's Mob and Campbell's Gang who all have a game in hand. Elmhurst Invincibles and Collie Clonk Clowns are still in with a shout 2 and 3 points further behind respectively. Pallav Roy represented Waddesdon Warriors against Tring Ping in his first competitive match for many years and took a win against young pretender Aaron Taylor. Tring won 3 – 2 with Aaron winning a fine match against Martin Taylor. Jock Campbell and Tim Sallis won a fierce and long match 3 – 2 against Titanics despite Joe Gerrans' finest efforts. Nobby Tennison for Titanics had too much know how for Jock and coached Joe well to a strong 2 set doubles success. Elmhurst Invincibles lost the chance to steal a march on their opponents when they lost 3 – 2 to Pat Willcocks and Paul O'Connell. Pat is having the time of her life in this year's competition, so far remaining unbeaten. Olu Sokoya had a tough match but his partner, Nick Gourley had the flair and guile sufficient to overcome a 7 point handicap against Paul. In the remaining match JC United reserves, Mick Simmonds and Malcolm Burr, achieved a first win for JC when they played Ladybirds, Lianne and Joan Fisher. Having lost all the singles, Ladybirds took some revenge with a doubles victory.
OLD STAGERS KNOW TOO MUCH 18/6/11 In the crunch match between David Mosley and Roger Shelton, playing as Tring Cockerels, and Old Stagers, David Shapter and David Bradbury, The Old Stagers proved too cunning for their opponents winning 5 – 0. In the second rubber David Bradbury lagged behind David Mosley in the first set 20-14 but then threw caution to the wind and came back to win 21 -20. The Cockerels did not have a look in for the rest of the match. This win puts Old Stagers in a strong second place with another crunch match on the horizon with third placed Haddenham Hobnobs next week. Hobnobs kept up their challenge by beating fourth placed Megabucks 4 – 1. Simon Witney won twice for Hobnobs with John Cripps winning once. Josh Perry with a start of 13 points claimed a good win against John. The Bicester team recruited Paul O'Connell to help them out this week and together with Andy Crofts they succeeded 5-0 against Clive Westbury and Joyce Witney. Meanwhile the leaders of the Monday Group Lee Mallick and Cynthia Kunschke continued their remorseless progress to the semi finals with a blistering 5 – 0 defeat of Ed Lock and Mike Rogers. They now have a cushion of 5 points ahead of The Old Stagers. The matches on Wednesday were much closer with no clear favourite to win this group. Aaron Taylor and John Richardson aka Tring Ping were made to fight hard by Jock Campbell and Tim Sallis but still came out winners 3 – 2. They are unbeaten so far but are equal top with Rob's Mob who have lost two matches. The difference is that when they win it is by a larger margin, this week 4 – 1 against Waddesdon Warriors, Martin Taylor and Mark Bevan. Martin sneaked a fine win against Rob Perry, but Josh was in prime form winning twice. The dark horses in this group must be Elmhurst Invincibles, this week represented by Ken Walton and Nick Cresswell. They managed a strong 5 – 0 win at the expense of Chris Hawkes and Jake Davis and lurk in fifth place just 4 points behind the leaders with a game in hand. Finally, Collie Clonk Clowns, Iain Willcocks and mum Pat, are also in the pack after their 3 – 2 win over Ladybirds, Lianne and Joan Fisher. The Clowns are 7 th but only six points behind the leaders again with a game in hand. This match saw a precious win for Joan when she sneaked past Iain 31 – 30 in the third set.
TITANICS FORGE AHEAD 9/6/11 Wednesdays' matches witnessed wins for the rising stars of Aylesbury Table Tennis. Joe Gerrans partnered Graham Butcher to a 5 – 0 win for Titanics over Ladybirds, Joan and Lianne Fisher, to take top spot after 4 weeks of the competition. Joe impressed showing a marked improvement on his winter league form. Titanics have yet to play the three teams below them, Tring Ping being currently second. Tring have the prodigious talent of Junior Champion, Aaron Taylor, who faced up to another youngster, Jake Davis. Aaron was the victor this time and also managed a creditable win against Steve Rycraft. Jake helped Steve to a fine doubles win for JC United to restrict Tring to a 3 – 2 win. Lurking behind the leaders are the combustible Rob's Mob who beat Elmhurst Invincibles 3 – 2 for whom Nick Gourley was unbeaten. Fourth placed Jock Campbell and his Gang had a fine 4 – 1 win at the expense of Waddesdon Warriors, Mark Bevan and partner, Martin Taylor, who won well against Tim Sallis. Jock was unbeaten for his Gang with Tim winning against Mark Bevan. Haddenham Hitters, Lee Mallick and Cynthia Kunschke, lead the Monday Group following their 5 – 0 beating of Clive Westbury and James Gibson. The Hitters are unbeaten at the halfway stage and look favourites to proceed to the semi finals in July. Megabucks occupy second place courtesy of a fine performance from Tony Greenham who was unbeaten in their 4 – 1 win against Iceberg. Vic Davies took a point for Megabucks but found the handicap of 7 points too much against Anna Wharrier. Hot on their heels and gathering themselves for an onslaught in equal third place are The Old Stagers and Tring Cockerels both with a game in hand. The Cockerels beat last year's winners, BaD Boys, 4 – 1, but Andy Crofts hauled himself back from a first set loss, 21 – 8, to notch up a creditable win against David Mosley. The Old Stagers were emphatic in their 5 – 0 defeat of Ed's Elmhurst. David Shapter with a younger Old Stager, Paul Rickard, would not be denied, although Mike Rogers and Ed Lock were unlucky not to gain some success.
HADDENHAM RISING 28/5/11 Two Haddenham teams have moved into the top spots in the Monday Group with emphatic victories. Lee Mallick and Cynthia Kunschke for the Hitters melted the Iceberg team 5 – 0 but only after Gerry Saunders and Paul Hartnell had forced the opposition to three sets in the first two rubbers. Haddenham Hobnobs are one point behind the Hitters after overcoming Clive Westbury and James Gibson 4 – 1. Malcolm Burr edged ahead of Clive in two sets but James threatened to eclipse both Malcolm and John Cripps with strong first set wins, only to fall away against their greater experience. At this early stage last year's winners, The BaD Boys are off the pace, losing 4 – 1 to The Old Stagers, for whom David Bradbury was in imposing form, snatching a close win against Andy Crofts and seeming to win easily against Pete Hargreaves. Still in the running are Tring Cockerels who had a bye this time but are in fourth spot 4 points behind with one game in hand. Josh Perry and Vic Davies representing Megabucks are third even after losing to Ed's Elmhurst duo, Ed Lock and Michael Rogers. Michael broke his run of bad luck with an inspired victory against Josh. Wednesday's Group are still led by Aaron Taylor and John Richardson aka Tring Ping, but they were kept to a 3 – 2 victory by Elmhurst Invincibles, Nick Cresswell and Olu Sokoya. Aaron enjoyed a fast attacking game against Nick, winning in 3 sets, but found the handicap of 4 points against Olu too much to get back. Rob's Mob crept up the table with a 5 – 0 victory against Ladybirds Lianne and Joan Fisher and are equal second with Titanics who pulled back a 2 – 0 losing position to win 3 – 2 against the Waddesdon Warriors, Martin Taylor and Mark Bevan. All players won a leg in this match but Graham Butcher and David Badham appeared to have more stamina going into the doubles. The dark horses in this group are The Campbell Gang for whom Bill McCafferty was unbeaten in their 4 – 1 win against Iain Willcocks and Paul O'Connell. The Campbell duo enjoyed good handicap advantages although Iain had a magnificent third set victory over Tim Sallis to claim a point for his team. TRING TOPS 19/5/11 The Vale's Summer Table Tennis competition has started with teams from Tring Table Tennis Club topping both groups. Nine teams in two groups will play each other to determine the top two from each group who will progress to the semi finals on 18 July with all matches being played at Elmhurst Community Centre. David Mosley and Roger Shelton represent Tring Cockerels and lead the Monday group with 7 points. They overcame handicap advantages to beat The Iceberg team, Anna Wharrier and Pete Eggleton, 4 – 1. Anna won a point for her team beating Roger 31-29 in the third set. Haddenham Hitters, Haddenham Hobnobs and Megabucks all have 6 points in second place. Mark Penn and John Cripps for Hobnobs won 4 – 1 against Ed Lock and Michael Rogers although Ed, with a start of 14 points, won a good tussle with John. Megabucks garnered 4 points in the battle with Bicester and District (The BaD Boys). Pete Hargreaves for Bicester had difficult handicaps to overcome and almost beat both Josh Perry and Vic Davies. Vic outdid Pete at the last gasp 31-30 in the third set. The Haddenham Hitters, Lee Mallick and Cynthia Kunschke, moved smoothly through another 3 – 2 win, this time at the expense of David Bradbury and David Shapter aka The Old Stagers. David Bradbury used his 9 point advantage vigilantly to win against Lee. The Tring Ping team look strong favourites to win the Wednesday Group following their 4 – 1 defeat of Lianne and Joan Fisher representing Ladybirds. Aaron Taylor, their young protégé, is looking good value with his improved form and healthy handicap. They have 7 points but have three teams following closely on their heels. Waddesdon Warriors (Mark Bevan and Martin Taylor), Collie Clonk Clowns (The Willcocks family and Paul O'Connell), and The Titanic team of Joe Gerrans, David Badham, Graham Butcher and Nobby Tennison, all had good results this week. Joe for the Titanics had an encouraging win against Chris Hawkes (JC United) although Jake Davis for United pipped Joe in their head to head. Pat Willcocks is still unbeaten following her team's defeat of Rob's Mob, against strong handicaps. The Warriors, however, suffered a 3 – 2 defeat, at the hands of Elmhurst Invincibles which saw a return to Table Tennis by Nick Cresswell. His partner, Olu Sokoya, won both his games and looks strong with an advantageous handicap rating. Early days which promise some close matches as we progress through the fixtures. 13/5/11 The first round in the summer league 2011 has produced 3 - 2 results in all matches except Waddesdon Warriors who become favourites for this year's trophy having beaten the Ladybirds 4 - 1. Some close encounters were seen and Martin Taylor for the Warriors kept Lianne Fisher at bay winning 31 -27 in the third set and then teaming up with Mark Bevan to take the doubles in three sets. Watch out for last year's finalists. The BaD Boys who were victors last year started well with a 3 - 2 win, beating Ed's Elmhurst (Edward Lock and Michael Rogers). Cleggs Combo from last season has been renamed Campbell Gang and Tim Sallis was strong for them with two wins against JC United (Steve Rycraft and Jake Davis). Dark Horses for this year's trophy appear to be Tring Cockerels (David Mosley and Roger Shelton) who had a strong win against Clive Westbury and James Gibson. Of Course the hidden depths of The Iceberg Team could undo everything. Gerry Saunders proved to be in top form in his team's 3-2 win against Haddenham Hobnobs. Haddenham, however, are right in there with Lee Mallick and Cynthia Kunschke for the Hitters beating off Megabucks 3 - 2. Titanics, Graham Butcher and Joe Gerrans tried not to sink but were unfortunate to lose to those Collie Clonk Clowns (Pat and Iain Willcocks) 3 - 2. Whilst the Monday Group winners are all equal with no clear frontrunner, The Wednesday Group are led by Waddesdon Warriors after the first week.
Semi Final The BaD Boys 4 Ladybirds 1 Cleggs Combo 3 Hatter and Latic 2 Final Cleggs Combo 1 BaD Boys 3 Finals week – Bicester triumph. Aylesbury's Summer League Table Tennis competition came to a competitive close this week with The Bicester and District Club taking the title against Aylesbury Sports' Cleggs Combo. Under the name of The BaD Boys, Bicester had seen off the challenge of Lianne Fisher and her Mum, Joan in the semi final. Crucial to this win was Andy Crofts' win against Lianne who had a start of 7 points. Andy won in three sets, 31 – 29 in the third. Lianne used her lead of 12 points against Pete Hargeaves more effectively, taking control with some steady hitting. In the other semi final Cleggs Combo had worn down the consistency of The Gooner, Ram and Hatter, although they had to add a Latic to help complete their fixtures. Latic, Paul O'Connell played well with a 5 point advantage to beat Pete Edwards, but Tim Sallis completed a fine double against Paul and Roger Mason to put his team through. Meeting the BaD Boys in the Final was a different proposition from their earlier match in the group stages when The Combo had won 4 – 1. This time Pete Hargreaves was in dominant attacking form, giving his team a good start with a two set win against Pete Edwards. Tim Sallis maintained his semi final form with a fight back from losing the first set to Andy Crofts and used his 10 point start to take the remaining sets and level the match. Andy regrouped for the game against Pete Edwards winning effectively in two sets. Now leading by two games to one, Pete Hargeaves ensured that The BaD Boys were this year's Summer League Winners seeing off a 12 point handicap against Tim Sallis, 31- 30, 17-16.
Previous Winners 2008 Quainton Rebels(Mick Simmonds, Neil Mack, David Styles) 2009 Haddenham Hardbats(Jon Abungan, Chris Hawkes) 2010 The BaD Boys(Andy Crofts, Pete Hargreaves, Adrain Varney) 2010 competition reports Week Nine – Last Season's Champions eliminated. 15/7/10 Last year's Summer League Champions, Haddenham Hawkes, lost out in the tightest of finishes in the Monday Group. Needing to win 5 – 0 against The Evergreenies to ensure safe passage through to the semi final, Ken Hill was the party pooper when he overcame a handicap of 15 points to pip the spirited Jake Davis by one point in the first leg. This gave Ken the confidence to do it again in the second leg, this time 25-24. Jake won plaudits for his win against the redoubtable David Bradbury later on. This group was very close as the top three teams all needed to win 5 – 0 to stand any chance of survival. The Bicester team of Pete Hargreaves and Andy Crofts did this in fine style against Janice Carey and Frank Hardy aka The Hardy Boys. But Cleggs Combo had it all to do, despite their advantageous handicaps, against Lee Mallick and Cynthia Kunschke of The Haddenham Hitters. The four singles all went to three legs but Bill McCafferty and Tim Sallis pulled out all the stops to take the match winning the doubles in two sets. The Bicester team and Cleggs Combo go into next week's semi finals from this group. Paul O'Connell teamed up with Tim Cheek to beat Barry Green and Pat Higgs of The Barmy Bats 4 – 1 to take top spot in the Wednesday Group. They will meet Cleggs Combo in the semi final. This match featured three players on 100% performances. Barry lost his record to Tim Cheek in the first game and then overcame Paul to take his record, leaving Tim as the top Summer League individual on 100%. The Ladybirds were defending their second spot against Tring Juniors for whom Aaron Taylor has been outstanding throughout. Giving 10 points to Joan Fisher he comfortably won 19-18, 25-24, but Lianne Fisher overturned matters beating Aaron in three legs whilst having to peg back a start of 14 points in each leg. Joan, meanwhile, took advantage of her 21 points start to beat John Richardson and give Ladybirds the vital points to take second place by one point from Tring. Matters were becoming close in the battle for second place due to Tring Cockerels taking 4 points in their win against James Gibson and Jock Campbell. This put them just one point behind The Juniors. Elsewhere Josh Perry took a well earned win for The Perry's and together with Dad, Rob, restricted Titanics to a 3 – 2 win. Graham Butcher found his form to remain unbeaten in this match. Week Eight – Defending Champions closing in. 9/7/10 Last year's Summer League Champions, Haddenham Hawkes, took a deserved 4 – 1 win against Pat and Iain Willcocks this week to join Bicester and District BaD Boys and Cleggs Combo at the top of the Monday Group on 22 points. Last week's leaders, Haddenham Hitters, had a free week and now languish in 4 th place two points behind the leading group. But they have the chance to affect the top places when they play Cleggs Combo in the final week. Both these teams will be relying on The Evergreenies to upset Haddenham Hawkes and The Hardy Boys disrupting the BaD Boys progress. Bicester missed a chance to go top when they allowed Torpedoes to win the doubles, although the match had passed well beyond the normal finishing time. Pete Eggleton and Anna Wharrier had made Pete Hargreaves and Andy Crofts work very hard with games going to three sets on three occasions with final games being decided by one or two points only. By contrast Terry Holland and Tim Sallis for Cleggs Combo played off equal gradings against The Hardy Boys, Phil Blind and Janice Carey, finishing their match much earlier. Games were close with Phil unlucky not to get past Terry. The Combo's 5 – 0 makes them a strong candidate for the semi finals. The Gooner, Ram and Hatter have added a Wigan supporter to their ranks to complete their matches. He, Paul O'Connell, proved a hit with Hatter, Roger Mason and in a dour and sometimes very loud match overcame Neil Mack and Mick Simmonds of Quainton 5 – 0. This effectively puts the football quartet into the semi finals, being 4 points ahead of The Ladybirds. Whilst Lianne and Joan flew away from Titanics Nobby Tennison and Joe Gerrans, 4 – 1, they will have to do well against Tring Juniors next week to claim their semi final spot. The juniors are currently in third place two points behind The Ladybirds. The evening was highlighted by a strong performance from first timer Joe who managed a hard hitting win for Titanics against Joan and the unflagging enthusiasm and innate skill shown by Aaron Taylor with two wins against the tough Tottenham supporter, David Mosley and reserve, Brian Whitehead playing for Tring Cockerels. The Barmy Bats beat off the challenge of Josh and Rob Perry although both pushed Pat Higgs close. Her relentless forehand was much in evidence against Josh. Week Seven – All change at the top again 3/7/10 This week's Mondays matches were all close 3 – 2 results, leaving Haddenham Hitters two points ahead of Bicester and Haddenham Hawkes who both have a match in hand. Cleggs Combo lie in fourth place one point further behind again with a match in hand. It appears that the semi finalists will come from these 4 teams. Lee Mallick, Paul O'Connell, Paul Hartnell and Brian Whitehead were unbeaten this week in their matches but Jake Davis rescued a point for Haddenham Hawkes with a valiant victory against Megabucks' Tony Greenham, giving his team a 3 – 2 win. Anna Wharrier and Paul Hartnell torpedoed The Evergreen Ken Hill and David Bradbury in their 3 – 2 success but still prop up the group being equal bottom with The Hardy Boys on 12 points. Iain Willcocks and Paul O'Connell playing for Collie Clonk Clowns harmed Cleggs Combo chances winning 3 – 2 where Terry Holland was unlucky not to gain a win taking both opponents to three legs. In the Wednesday Group Roger Mason and Tim Cheek made light work again of their opponents, this time it was Titanics' Graham Butcher and David Badham, winning 5 – 0, each time in two legs. They top the group by 3 points from Ladybirds who take on Titanics in their next match. Tring Juniors and Tring Cockerels are third and fourth. The semi finalists from this group could well come from these four teams, each having a match in hand on fifth placed JJK and Quainton Rebels. Cockerels and Tring Juniors each had 4 – 1 wins with unbeaten performances from Aaron Taylor and Roger Shelton. James Gibson for JJK stole a game from John Richardson and Josh Perry dented David Mosley in three hard fought sets. Neil Mack took a maximum for Quainton in their 3 – 2 defeat of Barmy Bats for whom Paul Furness won once. Week Six – Ladybirds and Bicester lead the way 30/6/10 Monday Group leaders, Bicester Bad Boys, have crept ahead after two crucial matches. Andy Crofts and Pete Hargreaves were pegged back by Chris Hawkes and Jon Abungan losing to the third placed Haddenham Hawkes 3 – 2, but then recovered with a crushing 5 – 0 victory over Haddenham Hitters, Cynthia Kunschke and Lee Mallick, who up till then had been the Group Leaders. Hawkes have a match in hand and lie three points behind Bicester but they share this position with Cleggs Combo. The Combo of Pete Edwards and Terry Holland outsmarted Evergreenies, Davids Bradbury and Shapter 3 – 2, but were well beaten 3 – 2 by the youngsters, Ben Elliott and Will Shackleton representing Megabucks. This time Terry partnered Tim Sallis. This group is very competitive, there being no better example than bottom team Torpedoes on 9 points taking an unexpected victory against Haddenham Hawkes despite Jake Davis' best efforts against Pete Eggleton, losing in three sets. Phil Blind was in good form last week for Hardy Boys beating David Shapter and Edward Lock of Evergreenies who were both successful against Janice Carey in their 3 – 2 win. Ladybirds have moved to the top of the Wednesday Group courtesy of a walkover against Barmy Bats and a 3 – 2 defeat of James Gibson and Ken Walton. Joan Fisher proved too good with her handicap advantage although James was close at 31 – 30 in the second set. The Gooner, Andrew Eggleton and Ram, Roger Mason found Aaron Taylor in scintillating form for Tring Juniors and teamed up with Joe Wheatley to win the doubles and stop the soccer supporters winning run. Picking the top two teams at this stage is difficult with Titanics at 7 th place on 13 points just 7 points behind the leaders. 2008 winners, Quainton Rebels, were stopped in their tracks by Tring Cockerel, Roger Shelton and reserve, Brian Whitehead, but both teams are still in with a chance of qualifying for the semi finals. Well done to Josh Perry for his maximum against Ken Walton and Jock Campbell, evidence that he is finding his game after a spell out. Week Four – No clear favourites 10/6/10 The top four Monday Teams met up last week and the results have closed the gaps for the third and fourth placed teams, Haddenham Hawkes and Cleggs Combo who are both on 10 points, four points behind the leaders with one game in hand. Cleggs Combo had strong handicap advantages against second placed, BaD Boys from Bicester and 75 year old Bill McCafferty for Cleggs celebrated by beating Ady Varney and denting Ady's 100% record. Bill then lost his own unbeaten record when Pete Hargreaves overcame the handicap of 12 points to win in 3 sets. Tim Sallis beat off the Bicester challenge each time in three sets to help Cleggs Combo win 4 – 1. Top team Haddenham Hitters, Cynthia Kunschke and Roger Mott, were eclipsed 3 - 2 by last season's champions, Haddenham Hawkes. Roger Mott took one game for The Hitters using his 13 point advantage to overcome Jon Abungan. Chris Hawkes was unbeaten for The Hawkes. In mid table The Evergreenies, David Shapter and Ken Hill, closed the gap on Iain Willcocks and his Mum, Pat winning 4 – 1, with Ken Hill unbeaten. Bottom teams, Megabucks and Torpedoes had a close match where Torpedoes were grateful to reserve player, Edward Lock winning both his games handsomely. Will Shackleton grabbed a win for Megabucks to reduce the defeat to 3 – 2. Tring Juniors remain one of the favourites for the Wednesday top spot without raising a bat in anger. They lie in third spot one point behind joint leaders, Ladybirds and Gooner, Ram and Hatter, with a match in hand. However, the footballing mad team also have a game in hand and have won their last two matches 5 – 0. This week Tim Cheek and Roger Mason had too much knowhow for Josh and Rob Perry making light work of the steep handicaps. Ladybirds, Lianne and Joan Fisher, kept in the hunt for top spot, taking their chances with a 4 – 1 win against Tring Cockerels, David Mosley and Roger Shelton. In the battle for the minor places Jock Campbell and Ken Walton lost out 3 – 2 to Barmy Bats, Barry Green and Paul Furness with some close three setter games. Titanics David Badham and Graham Butcher squeaked past 3 – 2 against Quainton Rebel, Neil Mack and his reserve, John Cripps. Four of the five games went to three sets in a close and enjoyable match. Week Three – Haddenham Hitters and Tring Juniors continue to lead the way 29/5/10 The top of the Monday Table is beginning to be very competitive. Whilst Haddenham Hitters, Roger Mott and Lee Mallick, beat off the Torpedoe challenge 4 – 1, The BaD Boys from Bicester kept in touch with a hard fought 3 – 2 win against David Bradbury and Ken Hill, The Evergreenies. Ady Varney pulled back a 15 point handicap to beat Ken Hill 31 – 28 in the third set but won a perfect handicap game against David Bradbury, 30 – 31, 31 – 30, 31 – 30, giving David a lead of only 4 points. Two points separate The Bicester Team from Haddenham with Collie Clonk Clowns a further 2 points behind following their 3 – 2 defeat of Tony Greenham and Gene Demagalski of Megabucks. Paul O'Connell was particularly strong for The Clowns but Pat Willcocks had an impressive three leg win giving Tony a 6 point start. Last year's Champions, Haddenham Hawkes, are lurking in 4 th place, one point behind with a game in hand. This week Jon Abungan and Jake Davis beat The Hardy Boys 4 – 1 with Jake winning well in three sets against Janice Carey. Watch out for Cleggs Combo in mid table with a game in hand also. Tring Juniors tightened their grip at the top of the Wednesday Group beating The Barmy Bats 3 – 2. Barry Green for the Bats had a fine maximum inflicting a first defeat on Aaron Taylor who had an 8 point start. James Gibson was in sparkling form remaining unbeaten against Titanics' Graham Butcher and Nobby Tennison. His JJK team mate, Ken Walton managed a win against Graham to give them a 3 – 2 win and to stay in second place. High flying Ladybirds were shot down 4 – 1 by a Gooner and a Ram, but Lianne Fisher used her 16 point start to beat Andrew Eggleton. These two teams are likely to contest the top positions, but previous winners, Quainton Rebels, took a 5 – 0 win against Rob and Josh Perry to put themselves into contention. Whilst that result looks overwhelming, 4 of the 5 games were three set affairs and The Perry's were unlucky not to take one leg at least. Second Week – Haddenham Hitters and Tring Juniors edge ahead. 20/5/10 Wins for Haddenham Hitters and The BaD Boys kept these two teams at the top of the Monday Group but matches were much harder, especially for Cynthia Kunschke and Lee Mallick against The Evergreenies, David Shapter and David Bradbury. Their match was a very close affair that lasted much longer than the others. Lee continued his 100% record bur David Shapter dented Cynthia's with a win 31 -29 in the third set. Malcolm Burr and John Cripps deputised for The Bicester Team with John winning both games against Tony Greenham and Will Shackleton of Megabucks. Will organised his 17 point advantage against Malcolm to win in three attacking sets. All teams in this group are competitive. Cleggs Combo turned in a 4 – 1 win as did Collie Clonk Clowns to put them equal to last week's winners Hardy Boys. Janice Carey stood out with the sole win for Hardy Boys against Iain Willcocks (Collie Clonk Clowns) and Bill McCafferty was impressive with a maximum against Gerry Saunders and Anna Wharrier of Torpedoes. In an equally competitive Wednesday Group, Aaron Taylor and John Richardson are leading the way for Tring Juniors after a second 4 – 1 win, this time against Rob and Josh Perry. Rob played well to defeat John in three sets with a 15 point lead. The Tring theme continues with Tring Cockerels equal second with Ladybirds having beaten Titanics 3 – 2. Nobby Tennison won the crucial points for Titanics. This match was notable for two Whiteheads representing Tring, Brian and Gordon, something that is rarely seen! A Ram and a Hatter overcame James Gibson and Jock Campbell but well played to James for using his 17 point lead to beat Roger Mason. His team mate, Tim Cheek, was too strong but it still took three sets for him to beat Jock. Finally Ladybirds, Joan and Lianne Fisher kept the Quainton rebellion still in check with a 3 – 2 win, but watch out because these lads are notorious slow starters! FIRST WEEK 13/5/10 The Summer League 2010 is under way with The Haddenham Hitters leading the way in the Monday Group but no clear leaders in the Wednesday Group. Cynthia Kunschke and Lee Mallick for Haddenham Hitters were made to work hard for their 5 – 0 win by Ben Elliott and Gene Demagalski for Megabucks, each game going to 3 hard hitting sets. The BaD Boys (Bicester and District) overcame Iain Willcocks and Mum, Pat, who claimed a point beating Adrian Varney. Equal second at this stage are The Hardy Boys, Phil Blind and Frank Hardy, who outgunned Torpedoes duo, Paul Hartnell and Pete Eggleton. The outstanding player in this group was young Jake Davis for Haddenham Hawkes who have started the defence of their trophy with a 3 – 2 win against Cleggs Combo. Using his 22 point advantage, Jake scrapped hard to beat Pete Edwards 31 – 30 in the third set. The Wednesday Group has four aspiring champions from the first round of matches, each team winning 4 – 1. Ken Walton and Jock Campbell (JJK) kept previous winners, Quainton Rebels, in check. Jock has recently returned to table tennis after a long break and used his points advantage well in beating Mick Simmonds and Neil Mack. Neil, however, overturned a 17 point handicap to beat Ken. Ladybirds, Joan and Lianne Fisher, beat Rob Perry and son Josh, another player returning to the sport after a break. Rob won their point pulling back an 18 point deficit to beat Joan. Jo Green was the sole winner for The Barmy Bats against Tring Cockerels beating Roger Shelton in three sets with a 17 points start. The outstanding player in this group was 10 year old Aaron Taylor playing for Tring Juniors. With an obvious improvement in his all round game he used his handicap well to take two legs with John Richardson winning once against Graham Butcher. Summer League 2009 Haddenham Hardbats win Summer League Final FINAL 22 July Pete Hargreaves and Arun Jogi tried their hardest with some excellent table tennis against two players in the peak of form, both with the benefit of testing handicaps. Jon Abungan saw off Pete in two legs with a start of 12 points in the first game where Pete narrowed the deficit to 7 points in the second leg. Again Yogi scored more points than Chris in the second game, but not enough, losing 31-23, 31-26, giving away 13 points at the start. Jon then maintained his one hundred per cent record beating Yogi 31-19, 31-29 with 16 points start. Yogi had levelled the scores in the second leg, but Jon kept his cool to take the game. This gave the match to Haddenham Hardbats who have been favourites throughout the tournament. In the remaining singles Chris dropped a leg against Pete before winning through and The Hardbats took the doubles to make the score 5 ? 0. Well done Chris and Jon. In the play off for third spot Joyce Witney and Clive Westbury beat Andy Templeton and John Richardson of Tring D, despite Joyce losing the first game to Andy Templeton. This was a gruelling match with all games going to three legs and scores in the legs being very close. There were friendly matches played on the other tables, thanks to Ken Walton, Stan Harding, Paul O'Connell and David Badham filling in the vacant places. Finally many thanks to David Ballard who turned up with the trophies and made the presentation for what has been an enjoyable competition.
